Here are a few of the things going on in or a short distance from South Logan County in the coming days.

Belle Starr By Herself

Fort Smith Little Theatre veteran Cindy Clark, performs a uniquely entertaining one-woman show about the life of Bandit Queen Belle Starr. Belle Starr By Herself is an official Fort Smith Bicentennial event and will be presented Aug. 9-11 at the FSLT, located at 401 North Sixth Street in Fort Smith. Doors open at 6:45 and the show starts at 7:30.

Pearl Starr was a successful businesswoman who owned numerous bordellos and saloons along the Fort Smith riverfront in the late 1800s. Her mother, Belle Starr, was an infamous Fort Smith resident who was murdered in 1889 at the age of 40. Her reputation as a crude villain and a horse thief, as well as her association with a lawless gang, kept her in the crosshairs of newspaper reporters, marshals, and gossip mongers throughout her adult life. But Belle contended that many of the accusations were unfounded. This script is the story of Belle speaking to the well-to-do members of the Fort Smith Ladies Club in an attempt to present her own version of the story of her life. The question is – was she a cruel criminal as the media depicted, or a self-determined woman who made less than respectable choices to survive?

No reservations will be accepted and tickets are $5 at the door.
