Here are a few of the things going on in or a short distance from the county in the coming days.
1 Cruise Night and car show: MVA Customs and Classics, located at 99 North State Highway 109 is hold a cruise night in Magazine on Saturday, Aug. 25. Registration starts at 6 p.m. and the show is at 7 p.m.
2 Bull riding challenge: The Jacked Up Bull Riding Challenge will be held in Greenwood at the Sebastian County Fair on Saturday. Stock contractors David Berry with Monster Bulls and Kirby & Rain Vaughn with bucking bulls. You won’t want to miss these stock contractors’ 30 bulls take on the 30 cowboys in a $3,000 added event. Pro rodeo announcer Tim Fuller and specialty act John Griffith will also be on hand. New this year will be wild steer saddling. Sponsors this year are Farmers Bank (Greenwood Branch) Shane Eads with Diamond E Leather, Arvest (Greenwood Branch) Lazy S Beads, and Twisted P Designs. Admission is free with gate admission to the fair, which is $5 for adults $3 for kids.
3 Hot rod run: Join in the fun as 200 street rods and hot rods descend on the quaint town of Mena in the Ouachita Mountains, Friday through Sunday. You won’t want to miss out on this three day event, complete with a street dance on the main drag at 7 p.m. on Saturday night and a hot rod parade on Friday at 5:30 p.m. The winding mountain road leading up to Queen Wilhelmina Lodge, a “Castle in the Sky”, will put your car and your driving through its paces. The contest offers two chances to Show-N-Shine, and numerous prizes and trophies. The event is 43 years running and is not slowing down yet. The entry fee is $25. 4 Free concert: Joe Nichols will perform a free concert at Center Stage inside the Choctaw Casino and Resort in Pocola, Okla., at 8 p.m., on Saturday. The show is a first come first serve basis and doors will open at 7 p.m. No ticket required but attendees must be a Player’s Club Reward member. Membership is free and requires no play requirement.
