Symphonic Band to perform

The University of Arkansas at Fort Smith Symphonic Band will perform at 7:30 p.m. April 17 at the Arkansas Best Corporation Performing Arts Center, 55 S. Seventh St.

The concert, which is part of UAFS’ Season of Entertainment 33 schedule, will feature an evening of classic symphonic works by Frank Tichelli, Leonard Bernstein and others.

Tickets are $6 and can be purchased by calling 788-7300 and at Admission also is by Season of Entertainment season ticket.

Rib Room announces concerts

Neumeier’s Rib Room & Beer Garden will host upcoming concerts by The Mallet Brothers (April 12), Backroad Anthem (May 2), Black Star Riders and the Violet Hour (May 5), Reckless (May 9-10), Jason Boland & the Stragglers (May 22), Blackberry Smoke (May 29), Velcro Pygmies (May 30-31 and July 18-19), Granger Smith & Earl Dibbles Jr. (June 19) and Fly By Radio (Aug. 15-16) at 817 Garrison Ave.

The venue also will host Cajun Fest 2014 with Dwayne Dopsie and the Zydeco Hellraisers at 5:30 p.m. Saturday and the second annual Shane Bailey Memorial Fundraiser May 16.

World-renown percussionist will perform at UAFS

The Percussion Club and the Music Department at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith will present a free concert with world-renown composer-percussionist Nathan Daughtrey at 7:30 p.m. April 15 at UAFS’ Breedlove Auditorium, 5210 Grand Ave.

Directed by Joshua J. Knight of Fort Smith, the event also features the UAFS Percussion Ensemble and will showcase the marimba, xylophone, drums, cymbals and various "effects" instruments, as well as solo pieces by Daughtrey.

A resident of Greensboro, N.C., Daughtrey is a visiting lecturer of percussion and music composition at High Point University, where he teaches applied lessons, directs the percussion ensemble and works in collaboration with the School of Communication and Department of Dance.

Daughtrey also will conduct a free master class before the concert at 5 p.m. April 15.

One-act plays to be performed

The University of Arkansas at Fort Smith’s Theater Department will perform its free "One-Act Showcase" at 7:30 p.m. April 24-26 in the university’s Breedlove Auditorium, 5201 Grand Ave.

The event showcases four short plays each night, ranging from 10-15 minutes in length. Each of the three performances will feature different plays in various genres.
