The union representing employees at the American Axle Manufacturing (formerly MPG) plant in Paris are going to hold an event later this month to raise funds to purchase equipment for Wood Street Park in Paris.

The event is being called Make Our Parks Great and will take place Saturday, May 20 from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Wood Street Park.

“We’ve got a lot of kids in the area,” said Kody Armstrong, who is spearheading the event. “It’s always good for them to have something to do rather that getting into mischief.”

The Parks and Recreation Commission will make the decision on how the funds will be spent, Armstrong said.

“Our suggestion will be to put in two horseshoe pits and do something about handicapped access to playground equipment,” he said.

The event will include live music, games, bounce houses, a car show, a car audio competition, a coon dog treeing competition, a coon hunt, a coon dog drag race and a 50-50 drawing. There will also be a drawing for a rifle. Tickets are $5 each or five for $20.

“Registration for the coon hunt will take place at the pavilion at the park on the day of the event,” Armstrong said. “You can hunt anywhere and everywhere. You don’t kill the raccoon. The deadline to for turn in is 2 a.m. at the park. The winner will be announced then.”

Armstrong said $500 has been raised so far.

“Several businesses have agreed to help us,” he said. “We’re also looking for groups and organizations to get involved with this.”
