The Paris Area Chamber of Commerce is partnering with the Save Our Students program in the Paris School District to provide snacks for some children this summer and they’re asking for help from the community.
According to PACC Executive Director Tonya Baumgartner, the community is being asked to donate snacks which will be distributed to students participating in the district’s back pack food distribution program. Boxes have been set up at the PACC office, CV’s Family Foods, Walmart and at area churches and members of the community can drop off donations at those locations.
Food items suggested include cereal, Pop Tarts, granola bars, nuts, crackers, cereal bars, fruit cups, apple sauce, graham crackers, beef jerky, raisins and animal crackers.
“We have a back pack program for these children during the school year, but nothing for them in the summer,” Baumgartner said. “So, I met with Nickie Kersh of Save Our Children and she thought it was a great idea.”
Baumgartner said donations will be taken for 11 weeks beginning Thursday through Aug. 10. The new school year begins on Aug. 14.
“The food will be collected weekly and given to kids enrolled in the back pack program and where home delivery is allowed,” Baumgartner said. “They’ll get a week’s worth of snacks for their whole family dropped off by volunteers.
“The focus will be cereal and snacks since many children are home while parents are working,” Baumgartner said. “We want this to be items they can open and eat. No items that need to be prepared will be given but if items like this are donated we will take them to Community Outreach Services’ food pantry.”
Baumgartner said Kersh estimates over 100 children will be fed this summer.
