A natural gas explosion near Ellsworth Cemetery in eastern Logan County forced the evacuation of about 30 people from their homes on Monday afternoon.

The gas explosion took place around 1 p.m. Monday and people evacuated from their homes were allowed to return around 3 p.m., according to Logan County Judge Ray Gack.

Gack said first responders discovered a main gas line that runs through the area had erupted.

“There was gas in the air, and you can still hear it,” Gack said around 2:45 p.m., referencing a low roar that could be heard from Ellsworth Road.

Officials with the Midway and Scranton fire departments, Logan County Sheriff’s Office and Logan County Emergency Management were on the scene.

Gack said the gas line is a 12-inch line running from Fort Smith to Dardanelle.
