Dola Fae McMinn passed away peacefully on August 13, 2018, in Bakersfield, Calif.

Born to Joe and Ida (Robinson) White, her journey began on December 20, 1937 in New Blaine, Arkansas. In 1944, her father, a carpenter, followed the building boom out west, moving the family to California and settling in Bakersfield, where Dola graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1955. In an era where it was much less common for young, single women to do so, Dola set out on her own, first to Fresno City College, and then on to administrative and supervisory positions, mostly in the petroleum industry, that would take her to Lancaster, Calif, to Hollywood, Calif., and, following marriage, to Missouri, back to California, and eventually to Houston, Tex., where she retired from Shell Oil.

As the oldest sibling, and later as a wife, mother and grandmother, Dola was throughout her life a steadfast, selfless and devoted provider to all those around her.

In retirement, Dola enjoyed the time spent with family and friends, travel with husband Michael, and friendly Canasta rivalries with her circle of friends at Kern City. With other volunteers at River Lakes Community Church and Valley Baptist Church, she produced beautiful, hand-quilted and crocheted blankets, sweaters and caps for those in need.

She is preceded in death by her parents Joe and Ida (Robinson) White, sister Virginia Nell, twin sister Lola, and nephew Damon. She is survived by her husband Michael McMinn; sons Steve Hicks (daughter-in- law Lori) and Jeff Hicks (daughter-in-law Hiroko); grandchildren Misaki, Natsuki, Sam and Jordan; siblings Don, Roy, and Darlene; and nephews and nieces John, Whitney, Dusty, Don, Ron and Tisha.

As she continues her journey in Heaven, we already miss her greatly—both her feisty personality and her loving, charitable spirit. Her earthly body will be interred near those of her parents at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Bakersfield. Graveside services will be held Friday, August 17 at 10 a.m. at Hillcrest. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
