Scranton area residents are going to host Santa Claus and Miss Arkansas Friday.

The Parental Involvement Committee for the Scranton School District is also planning to stage a Christmas Parade after Miss Arkansas, Amy Crain, delivers an address on bullying prevention and recovery beginning at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the school.

But before Miss Arkansas gets to talk with students, Santa Claus will be in the lobby of the district’s gymnasium to talk with children and let parents take photographs. Hot chocolate will be served free of charge. Santa Claus will be in the gymnasium lobby beginning at 4:30 p.m.

The committee is encouraging students in grades seven to 12 to decorate a vehicle and ride in the parade. The theme of the parade is Be Kind to Each Other. Cash prizes will be awarded for first through fifth place entries in the parade. Vehicles will be judged using the following criteria — creativity, originality, theme (anti-bullying, Christmas or winter) and have a parent or guardian in attendance.

First place will win $300. Second place will win $200. Third place will win $100. Fourth place will win $60 and fifth place will win $40.

Elementary school students have been working on anti-bullying posters as part of a contest and those will be displayed in the gymnasium. First place will win a $25 gift card from Walmart. Second place will win a $15 gift card from Walmart. Third place will win a $10 gift card from Walmart.

In addition to prices in those two contests, there will be more than 40 door prizes awarded during the event. Each person attending the address by Miss Arkansas will be given a free ticket to enter the drawings for the 40 door prizes.
