Members of the Paris High School FFA are extremely involved in the community and work hard to raise money for, build items for, and help clean up in many ways. One project the FFA is involved in this year is the selling of Poinsettias to raise money for the Toys for Tots program.

Members of the community can be an instrumental part of this fundraising effort by purchasing Poinsettias for themselves. The FFA has ordered a variety of Poinsettias and will be selling them for $10 each on a first come first serve basis. The group hopes to sell 160 plants and donate $1000 to the Toys for Tots program.

Poinsettias have long been a popular Christmas gift and even have a legend attached to them for Christmas. According to the legend, a poor Mexican girl named Pepita had no gift for the Christ Child and Christmas Eve Services. As she walked slowly to the chapel she saw some common weeds along the roadside and gathered a handful fashioning them into a small bouquet. Her cousin Pedro had assured her that even the most humble gift, if given in love, will be acceptable in His eyes. As Pepita approached the altar, she remembered her cousin’s words and felt her spirit lift as she knelt to lay the bouquet at the foot of the nativity scene. The bouquet of weeds burst into blooms of brilliant red, and all who saw them were certain that they had witnessed a Christmas miracle right before their eyes. From that day on, the bright red flowers were known as the Flores de Noche Buena, or Flowers of the Holy Night, for they bloomed each year during the Christmas season. Today, the common name for this plant is the Poinsettia.
