Members of the community including Conway mayor Bart Castleberry and senator Jason Rapert were in attendance to a flag raising ceremony held Saturday at the Conway VFW on Old Morrilton Highway.
The ceremony opened with a prayer followed by a show of appreciation for the events coordinators, volunteers and many donors.
Mayor Castleberry addressed those present and spoke of the different ways the city of Conway was keeping flag traditions and customs by doing various acts such as replacing lights and trimming bushes near flag poles.
Senator Rapert read a formal resolution passed by the Arkansas Senate that was being presented to the VFW.
The citation gave the organizations history and proclaimed that the original flagpole dedicated in 1985 was being "replaced with an updated, taller and more durable flagpole that will continue to proudly celebrate the memory of the departed comrades of VFW Post 2259."
The ceremony ended with members of the Arkansas National Guard raising the flag while the national anthem was sung.
Those in attendance were welcomed inside for a prepared lunch and other refreshments.
