Best of the River Valley Preps event, featuring gold medalist Gabby Douglas and honoring top athletes and coaches from throughout the River Valley, has been postponed until Tuesday, June 11, due to catastrophic flooding in the River Valley region. The

The event, previously slated for Thursday, May 30, will still take place from 6-9 p.m. at the Fort Smith Convention Center. Doors will open at 5:45 p.m. to the general public.

“While we could have proceeded as planned, we were concerned about putting students and their families in dangerous situations while attempting to attend this unparallelled event,” Matt Guthrie, regional vice president for Gatehouse Media, said Tuesday.

As of Tuesday, tickets were sold out for the event, according to event coordinator Ashley Yeary. However, due to the change in schedule, there may be some families who cannot attend, which would open up ticket sales to others if needed. There are currently more than 1,100 people registered for the annual event.

The Best of the River Valley Preps event is an annual awards banquet hosted by the Times Record with support from presenting sponsor Arvest Bank, Shoppers Value and Taco Bell. Many other area businesses all support the event through sponsorships that allow honorees to attend the event at no charge. Others who would like to attend may purchase a ticket for $55 or buy a table for 10 for $500. The event includes a plated dinner, awards ceremony, special performances from local band and cheer teams, as well as a Q&A with a three-time gold medalist and three-time world champion gymnast Gabby Douglas.

“We are still excited that Gabby Douglas was able to work with her schedule to accommodate our need to postpone due to flooding,” Yeary said.
