The Fifth Annual Deputy Sonny Smith Memorial Buddy Bass Tournament will be held on September 7 at the Spadra Boat Dock (East Ramp) in Clarksville.

Deputy Sonny Smith was a Reserve Deputy for Johnson County Sheriff’s Office in Clarksville Arkansas. On May 15, 2015 Deputy Smith was shot and killed in the line of duty while assisting the canine team in locating a residential burglary suspect. He was a good-hearted man and very brave; with his dying breath, he continues to shoot at the suspect protecting his two fellow officers behind him.

In the attempts to help his family and the community heal, a close group of friends, started the Deputy Sonny Smith Memorial Bass Tournament. The original goals were to raise money for Deputy Smith’s family, bring a broken community back together and to carry on Deputy Smith legacy. Deputy Smith had always had an involvement with the youth in the Johnson county community. When you ask a child what they want to be when they grow up, some say a doctor or a cop. Deputy Smith was one of the many officers in Johnson county that inspired the children.

However, the goal of the second year changed and a foundation was made. With this foundation, a percentage of the proceeds of the tournament go to the foundation for area high school students. These students are required to have a career path in a public servant job such as a police officer, nurse or firefighter. This would be our fifth year to host this tournament, so with the help of your donation we will be able to continue the growth of the tournament to raise more and more money, which will allow the foundation to provide additional scholarships.
