Local author Anita Downs hosted a book signing this past Saturday at the Gattis Logan County Library featuring her book ‘Persons Of Speech.’

While home-schooling her small children, Down’s had the idea to develop a children’s educational book. She began writing the book, but life prevented Down’s from ever publishing. After her children were grown, Down’s decided to make her dream a reality and, in December 2018, signed a contract with Christian Faith Publishing in Pennsylvania for her book ‘Persons Of Speech.’

“I wrote it [the book] probably 20 years ago, but I submitted it to them in October and signed a contract on December 30 of 2018,” said Downs.

The book is targeted for ages 5 to 11 and contains characters based off of parts of speech and includes Nancy Noun, Vera Verb, Pete Pronounand Adjective Annie. Each character represents a separate story within the book and is written in rhyming verse.

Downs said that the book is somewhat of a family affair as Audra Bridges, Downs’ niece, is responsible for multiple pieces of the artwork in the book.

“One of the stories is all her [work],” said Downs. “Part of the artwork was by the publisher, but [Bridges] did do all of the character designs they used.”

Downs has plans for a sequel of the other four parts of speech — interjection, conjunction, adverb, and preposition — depending upon the success of Persons of Speech.

The books are available in both paperback and hardback at Amazon, Books-a-Million and Barnesandnoble. The ebook form will soon be available.

Downs has also visited several area schools, including Booneville and her alma mater in Magazine — she is a 1981 graduate of J.D. Leftwich High School.

The next book signing events will take place on March 10 at the Fort Smith Public Library, Logan County Library in Booneville, on March 14 and at the Franklin County Library in Ozark on March 28. In addition to signing copies of her work, the author will also be presenting a reading from the book.

Downs is married to Dain Downs. She has two children, Megan Wagoner and Shane Downs.
