Community Outreach Services Inc. announced they would be reopening to the public on Monday, May 18, at 9 a.m. COS has been closed since March 19 due to COVID-19.

Director Susan Johnson said, “However we have been taking care of our at-risk and low-income households in the area, operating on reduced hours with board members manning the building and phone line.”

Customers will not be allowed to enter the building to shop without a mask and masks will not be supplied by COS. Masks must be made of cloth or be hospital-grade. COS will also be limiting the number of customers allowed to shop at a time, and no person will be allowed to enter if they are exhibiting symptoms of sickness.

“For the foreseeable future, we also ask that you do not bring your children/grandchildren into the building when shopping.”

Clients must also wear a mask when entering the building. If a client does not have a mask, a COS volunteer will assist from outside the front door and fill out the application after an I.D. is provided. Only one person per household is allowed.

Johnson said that COS would begin accepting donations during regular business hours after May 18, or after hours if you call ahead and make arrangements.

“For the safety of our volunteers, any questionable donations will be sent straight to the trash.”

COS is also reducing the number of daily volunteers within the building and volunteers are asked to stay home if they are experiencing unexplained symptoms of sickness. Volunteers will work 9 a.m. until noon and will be sent home early if all work is caught up.

“All volunteers will wear masks at all times unless there is no one within six feet of us. Sorters will sanitize their hands frequently and wear gloves.”

Johnson also said that no meals would be provided for volunteers until further notice and no unnecessary congregating will be allowed in an area of the building.

“It is our hope that we can relax some of these rules as time goes on, but be assured that Community Outreach is here to serve the community while protecting the health of our volunteers as well.”

Starting May 18, business hours will be Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. until noon.
