The Fort Smith Fire Department’s bomb squad was called to Paris Monday evening to investigate a suspicious package inside a backpack found in the 1100 block of North Hickory Street.

Members of the bomb squad determined the package was a small electronic safe, wrapped in three layers of plastic, that contained nothing hazardous, according to Paris Police Chief John O’Brien. The backpack and safe were taken to the Paris Police Department for further investigation, O’Brien said.

A man and wife walking on North Hickory street saw the item and reported it to the police at 6:20 p.m., telling them they detected a chemical odor coming from the backpack. After looking into the backpack, a police officer called the bomb squad. Agents with the 15th Judicial District Drug Task Force were also called to the scene. North Hickory Street was closed to traffic until the scene was cleared around 11 p.m., O’Brien said.
