Joan Marie (Whittaker) Spicer, 85 passed away on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 in Birmingham, Ala. She was born on July 18, 1927, in McCurtain, Okla., in Haskell County to the late William Russell Whittaker and Beatrice Lorene Allen Whittaker. Both of her parents were natives of Haskell County Oklahoma.

The Whittaker family moved to Logan County in Arkansas in 1933. Mr. Whittaker worked as foreman of the K & S Coal Mine located between Prairie View and Scranton. After attending Prairie View Grade School, Joan graduated from Scranton High School where she was salutatorian of the 1944 class. Following graduation, she worked in Fort Smith. In 1946, she married Odell Fay Spicer and they settled on the Spicer farm near Scranton. She lived there until moving to Rogers in 19­­95 and then to Hoover Alabama in 2008. Joan is preceded in death by her parents, William and Beatrice Whittaker; husband, Odell Fay Spicer and brother Jim Whittaker.

Funeral Service was held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, July 6, 2013 at First Baptist Church in Scranton with burial in Prairie View Cemetery under the direction of Roller Funeral Home in Paris. Sign online guestbook at

Joan is survived by her sons, William Robert Spicer and wife Jane of Scranton, and James Frank Spicer and wife Barbara of St. Joseph, Mich.; daughter, Linda Suzanne (Spicer) Lott and husband Wiley of Hoover, Ala.; sisters, Patricia Koch of Kingsburg, Calif., and Nancy Tidwell of Lubbock, Tex.; brother, Charles Whitaker of Selma, Calif.; grandchildren, William Robert Spicer Jr. and wife Christina of Scranton, Thomas Dell Spicer of St. Joseph, Mich., Jayme Lynn Kain and husband Rob of Fayetteville, John Chancellor Lott of Hoover, Ala., and Caitlin Spicer Lott of Hoover, Ala.; great-grandchildren, Samantha Nicole Spicer and Kimber Alexis Spicer both of Scranton.
