Paris had one of the best defensive teams in the state last year and went 12-2 as one of the best teams in school history.

While the Eagles (3-0-1, 1-0) had only two starters back on defense, the unit has been strong again and allowed only 16 points in four games.

Most impressively, Paris allowed only seven points to 4A Farmington and Mansfield in the 3A-4 opener on Friday. In the second half, Paris held Mansfield to a standstill and overcame a 7-0 deficit for a 26-7 win.

"They have been a very pleasant surprise, even to the coaches," Paris coach Bryan Hutson said. "We don’t really have any stars, but they play very good team defense in making their reads and being where they are supposed to be and by tackling well."

Paris will play No. 1-ranked Charleston (4-0, 1-0) Friday. The Tigers have scored 145 points already this season.
