Four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the score tied at 28-28, and the Lady Eagles did something they hadn’t done in the last minutes of some of their previous games - control the ball, not commit turnovers, and knock down key free throws. Doing this, the Lady Eagles were able to capture a lead on the Manila Lady Lions and advance to the second round of the state tournament.

Senior Christa Huber and freshman Lycia Peevy combined for 36 of the Lady Eagles points in the game with both hitting crucial free throws in the final four minutes of the fourth quarter.

Both teams had a bit of trouble in the opening quarter getting their shots to fall but the Lady Eagles managed to hold a one point lead by a score of 8-7.

Morgan Highfield spent most of the first half on the bench in foul trouble but the Lady Eagle sixth player, Hannah Simmons, went to the floor and played hard helping the Lady Eagles to a 12 point second quarter. Playing great defense, the Lady Eagles kept the Lady Lions from getting on the board until the 1:15 mark of the quarter. At the halftime break, the Lady Eagles held a 20-9 lead.

Manila’s shots began to fall in the third quarter and Paris’ defense broke down a bit allowing the Lady Lions to get to the basket and pump in 15 points while holding the Lady Eagles to only eight points bringing the score to 28-26.

The Lady Lions opened the fourth quarter with the ball and quickly tied the game at 28 all but the Lady Eagles kept their heads about them and did a great job of controlling the ball and when given the opportunity to get to the free throw line, took advantage and knocked down nine straight shots to grab a lead that they would not relinquish. Scoring 19 points in the fourth quarter, the Lady Eagles captured the 47-39 win and moved into the second round of play.

Paris played Jessieville on Monday evening with a chance to advance to the semifinals which were played on Tuesday. More information regarding these games will be available next week here in the Paris Express.
